Bel Air Park Honors Frederick Ward
Friday, June 11th, 2010
Bel Air’s Armory Park, which formally opened this month, honors the late Frederick Y. Ward. The park will bear Frederick Ward’s name in tribute to the work he invested in the community. Over the years, Mr. Ward acquired and renovated a number of buildings on Main Street, helping keep Hardford County a vibrant place. A plaque is in place in the Park to commemorate his efforts.
Craig Ward, Fred’s son and now president of Frederick Ward Associates said, “I’m absolutely thrilled about it. They have known my father for a long time and knew of his influence in revitalizing Main Street.”
Frederick Ward Associates itself contributed a great deal to the Park. We donated the design services, along with construction help, to make the Park a special place. We are proud to carry Fred Ward’s legacy of investing in our community.
Read more about the Frederick Ward Park and insight on the Park’s landscape.

Frederick Ward Associates Clean Up Plumtree Run
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Here at Frederick Ward Associates, we believe in investing in our community, and have recently adopted a stream for clean up. On May 22, we walked the Plumtree Run streambed to remove accessible trash and debris, with the permission of all the landowners and with support from the Town of Bel Air Public Works.
Plumtree Run originates in downtown Bel Air and meanders through the community to Atkisson Reservoir in Harford Glen. We have adopted the segment between George Street and the Upper Chesapeake Medical Campus.
This is the first stream adoption in our area, which uses similar principles as the Adopt-a-Highway and SWAT programs for roadside cleanup. The Frederick Ward Associate Environmental and Sustainability teams have coordinated this effort.

State Highway Access Permit Stakeholder Review Group Formed
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
In Maryland, new construction projects that access state roads are subject to a lengthy permit process that, over the past several years, has become increasingly difficult to manage and impossible to predict. Economic development has been delayed and in a market where projects are few and far between, any delay in moving these projects forward could mean the difference between working and collecting unemployment.

Fostering Economic Development in Maryland
With the help of Harford County Delegate, Mary Dulaney James, a dialogue with the State Highway Administrator, Neil J. Pederson initiated a move to bring industry leaders together to make recommendations on improving the process to foster economic development. Representatives from across the state, from both the private and public sectors, are members of the SHA Access Permit Stakeholder Review Group that will be chaired by the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development Christian Johansson.
Ideas to Improve Efficiency
Ideas will be developed to improve the efficiency, clarity, and consistency of the access permit process while maintaining the goal of ensuring public safely and operational integrity. Streamlining the necessary submission and coordination efforts will be a focus along with the use of technology to allow applicants the ability to obtain real-time updates on the process.
Recommendations are to be made by September 2010 with an aim to identify opportunities for improvements that could be easily and quickly implemented possibly even prior to the final recommendations.

Solar Incentives in Maryland
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

There has been no better time than now to look at solar energy as a potential source of power for your home or business. A number of factors, like the rising cost of energy in the Mid-Atlantic, or the green jobs push from the Obama administration, have led us to consider alternate energy options like solar energy.
If you are interested in solar energy for your home or business, a solid starting point is to visit the Maryland Energy Administration’s website. There, you will find a wealth of data and information regarding a number of energy resources, including solar energy. Additionally, the site has information on overall energy efficiency, renewable energy, and conventional energy sources. Information on incentives, grant programs, and federal grant opportunities are available. They’ve also got residential case studies and a variety of relevant links at your disposal, like consumer’s guides to solar thermal heating, buyer’s guides to solar systems, and guides on zero energy homes.
Frederick Ward Associates is pleased to be working on multiple solar projects for the City of Bowie, as well as a residential system with Harford Habitat for Humanity / Harford Technical High School and Astrum Solar for the 2nd Annual “Habi-Tech” Modular LEED Home.
Feel free to contact us if you need any advice on how to integrate solar energy into your existing structure or new project. We can offer site analysis, solar shading diagrams / modeling, roof analysis, and more.

Military Leadership: It Also Applies to Business
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
In almost every business situation, good leadership is key to overall success. Here at Frederick Ward Associates, we have learned to take a note from military style leadership, knowing that it can apply to our own situations. Those in military situations find that good leadership can keep them alive, and while our decisions may not be life and death, good leadership can equal success on the business front.
What is leadership?
Leadership can mean different things to different groups, but “to lead” is generally defined as “to go before,” “to influence or induce,” or “to guide in direction, course, action, opinion, etc.”
Leadership is important because good leaders build strong relationships, which result in strong teams. That ultimately translates into achieving success, whether it is in meetings or working on a client project.
There are three basic leadership styles: Authoritarian, Participative and Delegative. The goal of a leader should be to incorporate all three styles into leading. Each have specific situations where, if used, are successful, and sometimes create failures. Each leader should reflect on their experiences to determine when each style was successful or not, and apply those reflections to future situations.
Key Ideas to Good Leadership
Whether it is in a military environment or a business environment, there are a few key ideas to good leadership:
- Leaders Plan
– Leaders Lead by Example
– Morale is Important
– Leaders are Moral and Ethical
– Leaders know their team

Sustainable Road Systems
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
State highway Administrations, Public Works Agencies, developments, contractors, and engineers can now pursue an official sustainability certification for highway projects. A new rating system has been developed for sustainable roadway design and construction called “Greenroads.”
Greenroads’ goal is to create measurable sustainability benefits to the general public, highway managers, and of course, the environment. The program is designed to serve to improve safety, reduce the use of raw materials, and extend the life cycle of the highway, among other benefits.
Greenroads is structured on a rating system which is used as a sustainability performance metric for both roadway design and construction. Points are awarded for positive sustainability choices, which are broken down into two categories: required and voluntary practices.
Required practices must be performed in order for a roadway to be considered a Greenroad, while voluntary practices are optional with extra points being awarded depending on the impact of sustainability.
Futhermore, each Greenroad project earns a certification, of which there are four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Evergreen. Each requires specific minimum requirements.
The Greenroads creators have attempted to develop a system that is fair, easy to understand, and most importantly, beneficial. Learn more about Greenroads.
