Winter Landscape and Plant Maintenance
Monday, December 13th, 2010
Whether you are a homeowner or a commercial business person, taking the proper steps to maintaining your landscape throughout the winter will make a vast difference in the spring. Most commercial operations do not need to mind attention to their landscape because a commercial landscape contractor is paid to upkeep the landscape. Homeowners, however, tend to be “Do-It-Yourselfers” and as such, need to understand what is involved in the care of your plant material.
There are a few things you can do to help take care of your plants during the winter months. Some simple tasks are:
· Keep snow build up off plant material
· Create a windscreen to protect plant material
· Cover plants as needed
· Prune those trees! Check this calendar to see when the best time is to do just that.
· Transplant more sensitive plants indoors for the winter months if required.
· Don’t forget to change the way you care for your indoor plants – winter affects them, too!
Each plant species requires its own special care and timeline of care. The Virginia Cooperative Extension Program is a very informative site that shows many different plants and plant tips. If more information is required, please see your local horticulturalist or nursery for tips about your winter landscaping.
Landscape maintenance is not something that happens a few times a year; it is a year round task to get the most beauty and sensation out of your selected materials. If the maintenance is kept up and done properly, the satisfaction of the end result is priceless.
